Regie + Buch: Julio Medem

Julio Medem Lafont wurde am 21. Oktober 1958 in San Sebastian (baskisch: Donostia) geboren. Zunächst studierte er an der medizinischen Fakultät der Universidad del País Vasco bis zum Abschluß im Jahre 1985, danach plante er, Psychoanalytiker zu werden. Aber bereits während seiner Studienzeit beschäftigte sich Medem auch mit dem Film. So schrieb er als Filmkritiker für die Zeitung La Voz de Euskadi und experimentierte schon seit Mitte der siebziger Jahre mit der Super-8 Kamera. Es entstand eine Reihe von Kurzfilmen, in denen Medem seine so charakteristische Stilistik entwickelte. 1992 drehte er seinen ersten abendfüllenden Spielfilm „Vacas“, der wie alle vier folgenden vielfach international ausgezeichnet wurde. Sein jüngstes Werk „La pelota vasca - la piel contra la piedra“ ist ein Dokumentarfilm, der sich mit dem politischen Konflikt in seiner baskischen Heimat auseinandersetzt und in Spanien wie auch im Umfeld des London International Film Festival zu hitzigsten Debatten und diversen Eklats führte.

„Tierra“ is an island, one man, a remote, imagined landscape on the banks that seperate life from death, the known from the unknown. A story of choices and simulated balances due to the existential anguish of a fragile and sensitive being that feels small and despicable in realtion to the incalculable laws which govern the universe.

„Tierra“ lives half way between the stars and the atoms, at the centre of the dark and fascinating cosmos of cicuits that the human mind contains. From here it can move, penetrating the smallest holes of mystery that life hides, travelling towards death through time, going back the 20.000 million years that separate us from the edge of the universe.

But „Tierra“ is also a physical and sensual place, full of light and smell, with possibilities for passion and blood so contradictory that they require a heartrending choice. I propose one, the most instinctive: existence must be terrestrial, without fear of transcendency, to search for simplicity on a human scale. Be happy in life. Come on down!
